Get from a question to the actual message.

Policy updates, advancement notices, program announcements, and deadlines often begin in a Navy message. Finding one should be possible even when all you remember is the subject.

Open Messages in SeaBag, search for the subject or number, and narrow the results. Open the full message to read the context before relying on a single sentence. Bookmark it if you expect to use it again.

The searchable archive is refreshed through sync. Cached text remains available when you lose the connection, but a saved message may later be amended or superseded. Check the official archive and any subsequent guidance when currency matters.

Search the way the message was written, not the way it is discussed. Message subjects use formal terms like “physical readiness” rather than “PRT,” and a policy change is often split between a NAVADMIN, its supporting ALNAV, and the manual it modifies. Start with a distinctive phrase you remember, then broaden by year or category if the exact wording fails. When you find the controlling message, open it in full and read the references at the bottom: they point to the instructions the message changes, and the sentence you actually need may live in one of them. Bookmark the message and note the year it was signed so the next person who asks can be pointed to the source instead of a summary. Messages also age: a later message can cancel or amend an earlier one, and sync keeps the archive current so an old bookmark does not quietly mislead. If the stakes are high — a board, a separation, a pay entitlement — download the PDF from the official archive and keep it with your own records, because the citation in your files is worth more than a search result someone else has to rediscover.
